Bread upma recipe (ब्रेड उपमा रेसिपी) is a delicious way to utilize any leftover bread that you might have in your kitchen. In fact, I get fresh bread to make bread upma if I don’t have any at hand. It’s that good.

The recipe of bread upma which I am sharing today is my Mom’s recipe. It has loads of tomatoes and aromatics. With a prominent tang from tomatoes, fragrance of ginger, and heat of green chilies, this bread upma will brighten up your morning! The bread upma preparation is very easy. It tastes good even after several hours. That’s why it is a quick recipe for breakfast and ideal for your kid’s lunch box.

Ingredients
  • Bread – 10 slices, torn into bite-size bits
  • Tomatoes – 4 large, finely chopped
  • Green chilies – 4, or to taste
  • Garlic – 10 cloves
  • Coriander leaves – ⅓ cup
  • Cumin seeds – ¾ tsp
  • Mustard seeds - ¾ tsp
  • Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
  • Kashmiri red chili powder – 1 and ½ tsp
  • Asafoetida – ¼ tsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Water – ½ cup
  • Oil – 3 tbsp
Instructions
  1. Pound together the green chilies, coriander leaves, and garlic in the mortar & pestle. The mixture should be slightly coarse but uniform.
  2. Heat oil in a heavy bottom skillet or handi. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle. Add the asafoetida and it will foam up.
  3. Add in the green chilies-coriander leaves-garlic mixture and sauté on low heat for a minute till the raw smell of garlic goes away.
  4. Add the tomatoes and some salt.
  5. Cover the handi and cook till the tomatoes get mushy.
  6. When the oil begins to separate, add the turmeric and Kashmiri red chili powder. Sauté for a few seconds.
  7. Add water and bring it to a boil.
  8. Add bread pieces and toss gently so that the bread doesn’t get completely mushed up.
  9. Let the bread get heated through. Turn off the flame. Bread upma recipe is ready.
  10. Serve the bread upma hot. Enjoy!

Here are the bread upma recipe ingredients. Tear 10 bread slices with hand into bite-sized pieces.

Step 2

Pound together 4 green chilies, 1/3 cup coriander leaves, and 10 cloves of garlic in the mortar & pestle. The mixture should be slightly coarse but uniform.

Heat 3 tbsp oil in a heavy bottom skillet or wide handi. Add 3/4 tsp mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add 3/4 tsp cumin seeds and let them sizzle. Add 1/4 tsp asafoetida and it will foam up.

Add in the green chilies-coriander leaves-garlic mixture and sauté on low heat for a minute till the raw smell of garlic goes away.

Add 4 large chopped tomatoes and some salt.
